You may have thought about starting a home education support group, or you may already be a leader of one.  Either way, SHEA has much to offer your endeavor in the way of support and training.   We are not out to take members away from existing support groups, rather we want to complement them with SHEA activities and benefits.  Small groups often have difficulty committing to attendance in order to get group rates for field trips, activities, and other events. We will provide Area Leaders excellent training on how to run workshops, cooperative classes, sports clinics, and academic competitions such as spelling bees, science fairs, and more.  We will work together to plan field trips which provide academic enrichment and result in higher attendance from the groups in your area.  Learn how to communicate effectively, and bring people together to enjoy positive socialization opportunities.

All of this training earns you the SHEA seal of approval - your group becomes a SHEA-certified group.  And that is going to be significant to home educators who are searching for an inclusive group that offers SHEA benefits.  When someone states they are a member of a well-known organization, they do so because it adds something to their character.  As Area Leaders receive training and the sponsorship of SHEA, home educators will soon know that this means that Area Leader is inclusive, has access to a wide variety of resources, and is going to be concerned about the home educator's needs.

Be a part of the growth of home education, and influence others for good.  Together, we can do amazing things!

A Volunteer Team Means a lot of Heart in the Dream!
by Dianne McLean, director of SHEA

Recently, I was reading an article by John C. Maxwell.  He is an internationally recognized leadership expert, speaker and author who speaks every year to Fortune 500 companies, international government leaders, and organizations.  Anyways, in the article he was using Mt. Everest as an example to explain teamwork.  He says, “The truth is that your team needs to be the size of your dream.  If it’s not, you won’t achieve it…If you want to climb Mt. Everest, then you need a Mt. Everest size team.  There’s no other way to do it.  It is better to have a great team with a weak dream, than a great dream with a weak team.”

This is totally my philosophy in life.  Certainly, I have a dream.  I want there to be an organization that exists to not only support home education, but one that supports the needs of home educators.  Those needs are diverse, so the organization needs to be flexible and willing to take a chance on innovative ideas.  Sticking to the status quo only inhibits growth.  I think we can do better than the status quo, but the team has to be great.

Many homeschoolers are humble.  They have a lot on their plates, and are too busy to recognize their own abilities.  But their experience as a homeschooler is all the qualification needed to be part of a great team.  Do you have a dream to see homeschooling become the biggest and most viable option for education in America? What lies in your heart? What do you see as a possibility for future generations of children? What would you like to see accomplished?  How will you be a part of the growth of homeschooling?

Are you a leader or a follower?  Both are essential to a great team.  Everyone has strengths and weaknesses that come into play when it comes to a great team fulfilling a great dream.  The challenge of the moment often determines the leader for that challenge.  A follower can often step into a leadership role, sometimes by accident and more often because a good leader recognizes something in that person and brings it out.  It could be for a short season, or it could be a permanent transition.  No one can win a great challenge alone – so we are looking for people who want to be part of a great team.  There are lots of tasks involved in the day to day operations of a homeschool support organization.  You can choose how much or how little you want to do – but anything is helpful to fulfilling the dream.  This is an all volunteer team – so there is a lot of heart in the dream.
