ARIZONA INFO
No portion of the information found on this site may be construed as legal advice.
As of August 2007, there are no qualifications required to homeschool your own children in the state of Arizona.  There are no record-keeping requirements for attendance, and homeschooled children are excluded from the compulsory attendance law.  There are no record-keeping requirements for grades or work portfolios.   A child who resides within the attendance area of a public school and who is instructed at home shall be allowed to try out for interscholastic activities on behalf of the public school in the same manner as a pupil who is enrolled in that public school.

SHEA highly recommends that you read the complete verbeage for the state statutes for Arizona if you plan to homeschool your child in the state of Arizona.

Children enrolled in a publicly funded virtual charter school are not required to file additional paperwork with their county superintendent, the school will take care of your paperwork.

Arizona State Legislature - Education

For all of the state education codes, click here.

If you want to homeschool your child in Arizona, you will specifically want to read the following statutes from the Arizona State Legislature link above:

15-763. Plan for providing special education; definition
15-745. Children instructed at home; testing; prohibition
15-802.01. Children instructed at home; eligibility to participate in interscholastic activities
15-802. School instruction; exceptions; violations; classification; definitions
15-828. Birth certificate; school records; exception

If your child is between the ages of 6 and 16, and you plan to start home schooling, then the following steps are suggested:

  • Find the information for your county's Superintendent (see list right), and file a notarized AFFIDAVIT OF INTENT TO HOMESCHOOL , along with the child's certified birth certificate within 30 days of starting home schooling.

    • Provide instruction in reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies and science for children 8 years and older. (Under 8 years, the state has no formal requirements.)

Click here for a list of Virtual Charter Schools approved by the State Board for Charter Schools.

List of County Superintendents' Offices:

*Some school districts have their own version of
the affidavit of intent form that they prefer,
which can be downloaded from their individual
websites.  However, keep in mind that according
to Arizona statutes, some of the material on the
form is not required.
